Background Information on 'The News', where and who?
The Portsmouth evening news is a local news paper, it has a circulation of 48,191, the areas of its circulation are shown in the map featured. The News' main target audience is adults, shown by a market research survey taken out in January 2009. The profile of The News readers is similar to that of the local population through this The News appeals to all groups and types of people, it has in the last few years seen a significant rise in readers age 15-24. The News sells 2 editions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, as the local news changes all the time, something that is front page in the morning can change by the afternoon, like the 911 attacks for example. The news targets mainly people in the social grade band C and below, due to being informal and containing stories on the local area and major world events, compared to larger London newspapers which are very formal and talk about stock markets and business events as well as the important headliners. Another difference between the news and other papers in different grades, is the language used, large London news papers like the telegraph and guardian are open to using long complicated words, and aim their reading level high where as the news aim their reading level at 12/13 year olds so it is easy and enjoyable for everyone to read.
