What is newsworthiness? News values? and Bias?

Newsworthiness is something that is interesting enough to be reported as news, a story in which would be of high interest to your reader and is apt to current world events.

A story that is newsworthy has a common trend to other news stories these are known as news values, media researchers Galtung and Ruge analysed news stories from across the world and saw what factors the stories had in common, they then came up with a list of values, an example of a few news values are as follows; Negativity, Closeness to home, Recency, Currency, Continuity, Uniqueness, Simplicity, Personality, Predictability, Exclusivity and Size. These values are a form of ‘scoring system', a story which involves high levels of values or many values in one story, would be a TV news bulletin or make the front page of the newspapers, this would be a strong story in the media world, in contrast with a smaller less successful story which contains week connections to news values.

Each of these news stories is reported from a certain angle, this may be through one of the media values listed or the writers own personal views, this form of writing is known as being bias, the way someone can push their views on to you subtlety through how they describe something or the photos and headlines they choose. This form of writing can then alter your perspective and opinion over certain topics.
